This walk at Low Mill at Addingham near Ilkley takes you on a very short walk along the Dales Way footpath. The full route is an 80 mile (128.7km) walk starting from Ilkley and finishing at Bowness-on-Windermere in Cumbria.
Drive onto Old Lane and turn your vehicle around near the gate just near where the road narrows, park next to the fishing signs for Myddleton Angling Club and walk towards Low Mill Village behind you. (Used to belong to Bradford No1 AA but they lost it. I was sad for it to go. I loved fishing here and was one of my first places I fished when I was young)
Just near the ‘entrance’ of the village there is a weir where you can view from the gate. Look out for the odd kingfisher and heron here.
‘Entrance’ to the village. Note the pillars on either side - In the 1880s there may have been a gate here.
Go through the village, taking note of the old letter box in the wall, the water pump and trough and the sign with dates on near the end on the right hand side high on the wall. Head up the flags between the houses.
At the end end you can view the river looking out the herons that like to stand in the field, and the fish making rings in the water.
Now, advance on the quiet road walking past the small houses on your right with a stream on your right.
Walk past the big house on your right and when you see the signpost on your right on the bend, take the path down here (closing the gate on the way down).
When you reach the bottom of the path, you will see this. Trout can usually be seen in the pool before crossing the footbridge. Just towards where the person in the photo above is stood, there is information about the church. And from here you will see a gate that goes to the church grounds. Take this route or walk across the field towards your left until you reach the road to the church……
When you come to this spot, you can walk along the path and go through the gate………
….admiring the fancy hedge work in the garden. A Celtic design maybe?
Turn right and up the hill. Along the way you can peer over the wall and into the stream and look for trout.
At the top of the hill on the bend, you will see a path leading away from the road, this is the entrance to the suspension bridge and there is sometimes an ice cream van/trailer here, so grab one! or wait til after you come back up the path. If you would like to walk to down to the river, you can either go straight ahead and you will come out at the High Mill. If you take the path on your right, this will take you to the suspension bridge, cross here and walk on your left on the field (keeping to the trodden-down grass path) to view ‘High Mill’ across the river………If you walk to the top of this field, passing High Mill, you will see a wood. Technically the public are not supposed to walk in here, but they ignore the rules and walk in the wood anyway. The stile and path was meant for those who fish the water.
Looking towards High Mill
Whichever way you decide to take, when you have doubled back on yourself and reached the area where you came out of from the church grounds (pictured below), you can either go through them again or follow the main road again.
When you reach here, turn left on the no through road to Low Mill. And then carry on walking back to your vehicle.
